'Giséle Pelicot' 12x16" Original Mixed Media Portrait Painting

In the spirit of the Inspiration Project, where I painted portraits of 100 inspiring people, I felt that Giséle Pelicot was an excellent addition.  She is a French woman who had been the victim of shocking abuses perpetrated and enabled by her husband. But she has become an inspiration for other survivors of sexual abuse for her refusal to be shamed into not publicly standing up to her assailants.

France, much like the US, has a very low percentage of survivors that come forward and/or press charges after experiencing assault, much less successfully winning the cases that do make it to court. While I hope Gisèle’s story inspires others to come forward, these percentages are hard to change without there first being changes in the justice systems in the US and abroad, and better support for survivors. Those are changes we have to continue to fight for.
